Decisions versus no decisions

Table games split cleanly. In blackjack your choices change the expected result: hit, stand, split and double are decisions with mathematically correct answers, and playing them correctly narrows the house edge substantially. In roulette and baccarat the outcome is fixed once the bet is placed — your only decision is which bet to make, and the edge follows from that choice alone.

This is worth knowing before choosing a game, because it determines whether learning anything will change your results.

Rule variants matter more than the table

Blackjack that pays 3:2 on a natural is a materially different game from one paying 6:5, and the difference outweighs almost every other consideration. Whether the dealer stands on soft seventeen, how many decks are used and whether doubling after splitting is allowed all move the edge. Two tables labelled identically can differ by a wide margin, and the rules are published on each one.

In roulette the equivalent is the wheel: a single-zero wheel carries roughly half the edge of a double-zero one. That single detail is the most consequential choice a roulette player makes.

Baccarat is the simplest and the tightest

Banker and player bets carry a low house edge; the tie bet carries a much higher one and exists as an entertainment option rather than a serious wager. There are no decisions after the bet, which makes baccarat the purest illustration that in some games strategy means bet selection and nothing else.

Side bets

Perfect pairs, 21+3 and their equivalents are priced with a considerably higher edge than the main game. They add variance and are perfectly reasonable as a deliberate choice; they are a poor way to try to recover a losing session, because they do the opposite of what that requires.
