How the mechanism works
An existing player shares a personal link or code; someone new registers through it, deposits, and usually has to meet a minimum activity threshold before either side is credited. The reward is typically bonus funds subject to their own wagering requirement rather than cash — which is the first detail worth reading, because it changes what the offer is actually worth.
The conditions that void it
Three recur across operators. The referred account must be genuinely new: a household that already has an account, or a device previously used to register, disqualifies it. The referred player usually has to deposit and play a defined amount within a window, and the reward disappears if the window closes first. And the reward itself carries wagering conditions with their own deadline.
None of these are hidden, but they sit in the terms rather than in the offer, which is why the most common complaint about referral schemes is a reward that never arrived rather than one that arrived and disappointed.
Self-referral is detected
Registering a second account through your own link is the most common attempt, and it is also the easiest to catch: operators match on identity document, address, device and payment method together. The outcome is not a declined bonus but usually closure of both accounts with forfeiture of promotional balance, and it is treated as a terms breach rather than a mistake.
The same applies to referring someone whose account you control on their behalf. From the operator's side it looks identical to self-referral, because the checks that catch one catch the other.
What to check before sharing
Whether the reward is cash or bonus funds, what the referred person has to do and by when, and whether there is a cap on how many referrals count. And a courtesy point worth stating plainly: the person you refer is opening a gambling account, and the responsible-gambling tools and helpline are as relevant to them as any bonus.
